Guests skiing and riding use the 500-foot vertical drop to create challenges and fun on forgiving trails. The Bryce Resort ski area has a base of 1,250 feet and a top elevation of 1,750 feet. The winter venue has 100-percent snowmaking ability, allowing the staff to maintain runs and supplement the limited natural resources. While it sits between the two mountain ranges, it receives limited yearly snowfall totals under three feet (the average annual snowfall in the area is about 30 inches). Sandwiched between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Appalachians to the west, the northern Shenandoah Valley is about as good as one can get for cold weather in a state known for mild winters. Washington Dulles International Airport handles international flights into the region, with Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport offering services out of Staunton, Virginia. From there, Virginia State Highway 263 heads west towards the resort area. Interstate 66 is the route of choice for most DC residents, with I-81 getting drivers to Mount Jackson. It might be a smaller venue, but it is popular with local park rats and families from the Washington, DC, area. Located in the northern portion of the Shenandoah Valley, this year-round resort provides visitors with some of the best beginner-friendly alpine skiing in the state.
